Kathryn and Carl Nichols

Carl and Kathryn Nichols have a heart for leadership, our community and our hospital. In 1998, when the hospital was building a 20-year plan, Carl helped form the Community Advisory Committee. Carl brought neighborhood and regional representatives together in order to build a mutually beneficial plan and stabilize speculation about hospital growth.

Kathryn has been active in many areas around Athens, notably as a founding board member of the Georgia Children’s Chorus (GCC) whom she arranged to perform for the dedication of the Loran Smith Center for Cancer Support.

When asked about naming the new Sacred Space, the Nichols’ wanted to be sure to include the donors of the former chapel off the Prince Tower lobby. In 1988, this original chapel space was given in memory of Daymon E. Jordan by his wife. At their request, a plaque of acknowledgement will be added to a wall within the Sacred Space.

Symbolic of the Nichols’ community mindedness and faith, the Sacred Space will provide a place for respite and prayer. “It’s important to find a place that is inducive to the restorative power of prayer and meditation, especially in a hospital setting where patients, visitors and staff are often in need,” said Nichols. “Kathryn and I are proud to be able to provide support for this very special space on campus.”
